There are a lot of sports already being played in the world. One of these games is the Foosball, though not that popular around the world as compared to football, it is one of the best games that can be played during recreation. But what exactly is Foosball?
The name is a corrupt version of the German word for soccer. This name is popularly used in America while outside the United States it has other different names. The game itself helps in enhancing hand-eye coordination. More formally it is known as table soccer.
Wondering how it is played? Players use their hands to control figures that are mounted on rotating handles to play. The figures include defense, midfield, and attack just like in the real football game. They place the ball in the middle and try to score by serving through the holes placed at the table sides. Players are allowed to move the ball at any speed they want.
What about the origin of Foosball?
Most history books have pointed to Harold Searles Thornton as the inventor of Foosball, back in 1922 and went on to patent it in 1923.He came with this idea after keenly watching his favorite team, Tottenham Hotspur F.C play. His wish was to play the same game at home. When asked about the basis of his game, he answered that he had been inspired by how matches always lived across the match box.
In 1927, the game was patented in the USA after his uncle Louis had paid a visit to Harold. In the 1950s, first leagues emerged in Europe and in 1976; a European Table Soccer Union was established. In 1962, Lawrence Patterson who was an American soldier in Germany, having played the game while in Germany, brought a table that was made in Bavaria in the USA. He then went ahead and trademarked the term “foosball” in Canada and in the USA.
The first foosball table to be made in America was in 1970 by Hayes and Furr. This led to its popularity which spread nationally. Its only setback came in the 1980s when the video games grew in popularity.
Following the pressure to make Table Soccer organized, regulate its competitions especially internationally and to establish it with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Table Soccer Federation (ITSF) was formed in France in the year 2002.It also managed to get established with the General Association of International Sports Federation (GAISF).
European Table Soccer Union was formed in 1976 after leagues from different European countries came together. The European Cup saw teams facing each other and from that moment it has become an annual event. One of the largest World Championships was in May 1979, it was graced by about 36 players from different European countries and the prize money was $250,000.
Currently, the game is played in almost every country in the world. A company in Switzerland known as Swiss is known for producing the foosball tables. The table is labeled as ‘Kicker’.
Next time head to the next Foosball center and try to score some goals as you feel the thrills and excitement that come with it.
